About Mairi

Welcome to Mairi.co! I’m Mairi, the designer and maker behind this independent jewellery business. From my home studio nestled in the countryside of Northern Ireland, I craft bespoke rings and unique jewellery pieces that hold deep personal meaning.

Creating sentimental jewellery is my passion. Whether it’s designing a new piece from scratch or remodelling inherited family jewellery, I strive to weave stories and memories into every creation. Transforming cherished heirlooms into modern designs allows me to honour the past while creating something truly special for the future.

My process combines modern technology with traditional craftsmanship. Every piece begins as a detailed CAD design, which I 3D print and cast before carefully hand-finishing and setting stones at the bench. This ensures each piece is as unique as the story behind it.

Ethics are also central to my work. I prioritise using Fairmined gold wherever possible and take care to source stones with transparent origins. This commitment means you can wear your jewellery with pride, knowing it was created with both care and conscience.

If you’re looking for a custom engagement ring, a piece to mark a special milestone, or to breathe new life into family heirlooms, I’d love to work with you to create something truly meaningful.

Celebrating memories and milestone moments.

Company Process and Ethics

We are passionate to do what we can as a small business to be as transparent as we can about our suppliers, sustainability and ethics in our own supply chain. Mairi undertakes almost all day-to-day running of the business herself and strives to ensure she runs her business honestly and with integrity, considering the ethics of her suppliers and supporting local businesses where possible.

The design and making process starts with the use of CAD (computer aided design). The advantages for this means we can present three designs for clients to choose from. The chosen design to be made is 3D printed in a castable wax. We get our designs 3D printed out of house by a supplier in the UK and is then sent onto a casting house for lost wax casting. 3D printing in a wax means it does not give off hazardous fumes into the atmosphere and the wax can be reused after the lost wax casting process. This process means we only use the gold required for each piece so no wastage. Our chosen casting house uses traceable metals that are 100% recycled, Fairtrade and Fairmined. We became a fairmined licensee in August 2018 and proudly chose to use recycled or fairmined gold for all our rings.

We use a range of stone suppliers who all comply with the Kimberly Process and uphold high standards in sourcing stones in an ethical and sustainable way. Our sapphires are sourced from suppliers that are supporting small scale artisanal mining communities creating fully traceable supply chains. All our rings are tested at the Edinburgh Assay office and are stamped confirming the carat of gold and will have our makers stamp IRI as well as the fairmined mark from April 2019.

We aim to produce high quality rings and believe they should come in high quality packaging. For now, all our rings all come in a hinged black leatherette box with a velvet insert - we are currently looking into the ethical status. We hope you keep these forever and believe it is important to provide a good quality product that will keep your rings safe when traveling and want to minimise wasteful packaging. Our chosen stationary is FSC certified and comes from a British supplier. We have chosen 600g Mohawk superfine paper so has a luxury feel while still being sourced in an environmentally friendly, socially responsible and economically viable manner.

We want you to be confident in your product and the company your buying from.

What is fairmined certified gold ?

Fairmined is an initiative whose label certifies gold of responsible origin. Guarantee that it is a traceable gold, extracted with the best mining practices aimed at preserving the environment, and support the development of artisanal and small-scale mining communities.

Fairmined certified gold comes from artisanal and small-scale mining organizations certified to the Fairmined standard. This certification guarantees that the gold has been extracted in harmony with nature, human dignity and sustainable development, contributing to the transformation of lives in these mining communities. In 2024 there are currently 7 certified mines. 4 in Peru, 2 in Columbia and 1 in Equador.

Who created the Fairmined standard?

The Fairmined standard and seal were created by the Alliance for Responsible Mining, an international non-profit organization that has been working since 2004 for the development of artisanal and small-scale mining communities worldwide.

Fairmined, created in 2007 is part of the Sustainable Mines Program, which seeks to accompany and lead small-scale miners to carry out mining that promotes their economic growth without harming the environment, that catalyzes their social development in line with the sustainable development objectives of the 2030 agenda.

Fairmined is the highest level of responsible mining, and obtaining its certification is a process that can take years to achieve. We invite you to learn more about the Alliance for Responsible Mining and the mines that are in different phases of the Sustainable Mines Program.
